3 things you can do to maintain your piano.
(for many years to come!)
1. Humidity control : Best for the piano is 40% ~60%
- Piano is made from mixed materials, such as wood, various metals, wool and even silk.
- Each material has different reaction towards humidity. (For example, wood can shrink and expand approximately 5% during the four seasons in NY area.)
- It is a good idea to get a hygrometer to monitor humidity.
- In NY area, run humidifier in winter time, and A/C or de-humidifier in summer time.
- Stay Cool! Too much heat in piano room, will cause extreme dryness.
2. Regular tuning : every 6 month
- To correct the pitch of every note by re-tightening each strings which is stretched to a pressure of over 200lb.
- It is important to keep the piano at or close to the “pitch” there is limit to tighten a string at one visit.
- The tuner can monitor your piano before any problems develop. (We recommend using the same tuner, so he/she will be familiar with your piano.)
3. Adjustment : every 2 ~ 3 years
- Tightening screws, shaving hammers, replacing small felt and others.
- During playing the piano, some wear and tear occurs on your piano.
- This is mechanical adjustment and/or repair performed on the moving parts of the piano. Tuners do not touch inside moving parts of piano (action) while he/she is tuning.
